Laguna College of Art + Design’s (LCAD) BFA program in Graphic Design + Digital Media (GD+DM) is truly exceptional. Becoming a student of LCAD’s GD+DM BFA program means that you are joining one of the nation’s most distinguished design programs.

MULTI DISCIPLINARY APPROACH

LCAD's Graphic Design + Digital Media program is print, advertising, web, 3D, motion, video, iPad development, package and action sport design.

 

Our program’s multidisciplinary approach recognizes that a creative designer in today’s world must develop solutions that move seamlessly between print, web, motion and video. A graduate of the design program will be adept with traditional theory yet lead in the innovative use of technology.

 

The LCAD Graphic Design major offers programs in Graphic Design, Graphic Design w/Illustration Emphasis and Graphic Design w/Action Sport Design Emphasis.

 

By training our students to become visual problem solvers and critical thinkers who are able to communicate in visually compelling ways, we are empowering them to be adaptive and successful in an always-evolving industry.

 

As a result, LCAD graphic design graduates have gone on to work in a range of fields from advertising, branding, web design, broadcast, action sport design, visual merchandising, publishing, packaging and print.

 

Their work has built the brands of ESPN, NIKE, Target, Google, Hurley, Fox Television, PacSun, MSNBC, Kawasaki, Surfer Magazine, the Syfy Channel and the Smithsonian among many others. Over 98% of LCAD’s recent Graphic Design graduates work in their chosen field, with most finding employment through LCAD prior to graduation.

Course Requirements

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Graduates will be able to:

  • Use research skills in the development of design project solutions.
  • Develop original concepts and design thinking to create effective solutions.
  • Apply principles of composition and color as non-verbal tools for visual communication.
  • Skillfully apply lettering and typography with expression and logical hierarchy.
  • Apply digital media skills for graphic design and image creation with pixels, vectors, 3D, and photography.
  • Craft multimedia or time-based projects that include 3D animation, motion graphics, user interfaces, video, and webpages.
  • Demonstrate professional development as evidenced through the completion of real-world projects with corporate partners, internships, or personal brand.

I was born in Washington D.C. and lived in Europe and the United States. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Graphic Design, I headed to New York to create work for clients including CBS, Revlon, Avon, Gucci, and CBS International.

Dan Jensen is the former Creative Director of Paul Frank Industries home of Julius the Monkey. Dan is currently running his own design company called MIXTUS where he focus on web development, motion graphics and design. He has been passionately working in design for over 20 years.

Assistant Chair of Graphic Design + Digital Media

Dana Herkelrath earned a B.F.A. with honors in Graphic Design and Packaging from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and an M.F.A. in Graphic Design from California State University Long Beach. Ms. Herkelrath has been teaching graphic design courses for over fifteen years.
